The only All-American in program history, Scott Downing was inducted into the Tippecanoe Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021.

Downing began his career in 1989, helping lead the program to an undefeated regular season and its first state final four appearance. A year later, he led the team to a return trip to Columbus, and his 14 goals and 14 assists earned 1st Team All-State honors — the first in program history.

As a senior in 1991, Downing recorded 13 goals and 14 assists, earning a 2nd Team All-American nod. To this day, he remains the only All-American in the program’s rich history and the only two-time 1st-Team All-State honoree.

He finished his playing career with 36 goals and 36 assists. To this day, his 72 career points rank 7th in program history and his 36 assists rank 5th.

Upon graduation from Tipp, Downing went to the University of Dayton where he was a 4-year starter and 2-year captain.

When his playing days were over, Downing began his coaching career as the junior varsity coach at his alma mater in 1997. He got his first head coaching job at Piqua High School, where he compiled a 26-15-2 record from 1998-2000.

Downing returned to Tippecanoe as an assistant under Bob Servis in 2001, and when Servis retired following the 2004 season, became just the second head coach in program history.

Over the next 17 seasons, Downing led the Red Devils to even greater heights. While his 268 career wins ranks second to his predecessor, he managed to improve on Servis’ 74.2% winning percentage by winning an astounding 80.4% of his games! He captured 14 conference titles, 8 district titles, 2 regional titles, and in 2019 led the team to its first state championship in program history.

Downing was named Miami Valley Soccer Coaches Association D2 North Coach of the Year 4 times (2008, 2010, 2011, and 2016) and Area Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2016.
